Spring Yard Cleanup After Snow: A Dog Owner’s Checklist

The first clear view of a lawn after snow melts can reveal more work than expected. Dog waste, leaves, toys, and branches may all appear together. The easiest way to approach a spring reset is to separate those jobs and do them in an order that makes the next step easier.

1. Look over the yard before starting

Check from a firm path or patio first. Identify standing water, very soft ground, damaged fence sections, and anything blocking the gate. Keep dogs out of an area with a known access problem until you have addressed it.

Make a quick list of the places that need attention: the main lawn, narrow side yard, dog run, and the edges where snow was piled. An overlooked side section can hold a surprising share of the cleanup.

2. Collect visible dog waste before lawn work

Start with waste you can see and reach. Do this before mowing, spreading leaf piles, or sending a lawn crew through the area.

Work in strips and inspect the edges separately. A second pass from the opposite direction can reveal material that blended into dormant grass on the first pass. If snow still covers part of the yard, mark that area on your list and revisit it when exposed.

3. Separate waste pickup from other cleanup

Bag dog waste separately from branches and leaves. Then collect toys, fallen sticks, and other objects that interfere with seeing the ground.

Scooping service does not automatically include landscaping, debris hauling, or moving heavy items. If you are arranging more than one service, explain which work each provider is handling. That prevents a lawn crew from expecting the scoop service to clear branches, or the scoop service from expecting leaf removal to be finished.

4. Recheck the gate after winter

Open and close it yourself. Look for a changed latch position, loose hardware, or ground that prevents a full swing. A gate-closure photo can document the finish of a service visit, but it does not repair a damaged gate.

Update access instructions if you have changed locks or need a different entrance. Share access details privately through your account or directly with the team.

5. Choose a routine for the months ahead

A spring cleanup is a useful reset, but dogs will keep using the yard. Decide whether you want to handle regular pickup, arrange recurring service, or combine service with spot checks between visits.
