Dog Sitters and Yard Service: A Shared Access Checklist

September 20, 2026•2 min read

A dog sitter may know your pet’s routine while the cleanup team knows the yard-service instructions. Trouble starts when those two plans do not match. A sitter can innocently release a dog or unlock a different gate at the same time someone is entering for service.

Before the household routine changes, give each person the part of the plan they need and confirm the cleanup team has received any changed instructions.

Agree on one entrance

Identify the gate the yard team should use and explain any interior gate between service sections. Give the sitter the same description. A simple note such as ‘right-side wooden gate when facing the house’ is more useful than two different names for the same entrance.

Check that the path and latch work normally. Pet sitting and poop scooping do not fix a broken fence. If access cannot be made secure, discuss another arrangement with the service team before the visit. The gate checklist covers common details.

Settle where the dogs will be

Explain the agreed pet arrangement to the sitter, including who will make sure the dogs remain in the appropriate secure space while the team enters and works. Do not leave this as an assumption that each provider will coordinate with the other on arrival.

The plan should account for more than the main gate. A patio door, garage entry or interior run gate can also change access. Tell the sitter whom to contact if the arrangement is not workable that day.

Keep private access information in the right channel

Send codes, lock details and specific entry instructions directly through the established service conversation. Do not put them into a public review or social-media comment. If a temporary code is used, communicate when it changes and confirm the new detail was received.

One household contact should remain responsible for approving service changes. The sitter can report an access problem without being left to guess whether to cancel, move or expand the work.

Tell the sitter what cleanup does and does not cover

Purge Pros services the agreed outdoor areas and hauls away collected pet waste. Yard cleanup is separate from feeding, walks, pet supervision and other sitter responsibilities. A scheduled cleanup also does not prevent new waste from appearing after the visit.

The gate-closure photo documents the end of the completed service visit. A sitter should still make their usual gate checks before letting dogs outside afterward. The away-from-home guide explains the broader arrangement.

If you are considering regular help, explore dog waste removal and check your ZIP and price. Existing customers should use their service conversation to coordinate a sitter, rather than submitting a duplicate new-service request.
